E-waste, or electronic waste, is electrical and electronic equipment that has been discarded, become obsolete or reached the end of its useful life. For organisations, e-waste can include everything from laptops and servers to monitors, networking equipment, mobile devices and other electronics.
Responsible e-waste management is not just a recycling task. Business and government equipment can contain sensitive data, reusable components and materials that require controlled handling.
Examples of e-waste
Common organisational e-waste includes:
- desktop computers, laptops and workstations;
- servers, storage and networking equipment;
- tablets and mobile phones;
- monitors, displays and peripherals;
- printers and office electronics;
- cables, chargers and accessories; and
- other electrical or electronic equipment that is no longer required.
Why e-waste needs a different disposal process
Electronic equipment can contain valuable recoverable materials as well as components that should not be sent through ordinary general-waste pathways. Data-bearing equipment also creates an information-security risk if it is sold, donated or recycled without an appropriate sanitisation decision.
A responsible process therefore considers security, reuse and recycling together.
Reuse before recycling
A device that is no longer needed by one organisation may still have useful life. Where condition, security and economics allow, suitable equipment can be tested for refurbishment, redeployment or remarketing.
Equipment that is unsuitable for reuse can then move into responsible recycling and material-recovery pathways. This keeps more value in circulation and follows the waste hierarchy more effectively than treating every retired device as scrap.
What about the data?
Computers, servers, mobile devices and storage media should be assessed before reuse or recycling. Depending on the device, media condition and information sensitivity, the correct outcome may be validated data sanitisation or physical destruction.

Western Australia’s e-waste landfill ban commenced on 1 July 2024. The regulations apply to specified e-waste activities and include obligations for e-waste service providers, significant business or public entities, landfill operators and certain e-waste handlers.

What happens after an e-waste collection?
A well-managed organisational collection typically follows a process such as:
- equipment is collected or received and identified;
- data-bearing devices are assigned the required sanitisation or destruction pathway;
- usable equipment is assessed for reuse, refurbishment or remarketing;
- end-of-life assets are directed to appropriate recycling and material recovery; and
- the organisation receives the agreed processing and reporting records.
