IT asset disposition (ITAD) is the controlled process of retiring, sanitising, reusing, reselling, recycling or destroying information technology assets at the end of their organisational use. A good ITAD program is not simply computer recycling: it combines information security, asset accountability, environmental responsibility and auditable reporting.
For organisations managing laptops, desktops, servers, storage devices, mobile devices and other electronics, ITAD provides a structured way to answer four questions: What assets left our control? Was the data handled securely? What happened to each asset? Can we prove it?
The process starts by defining scope. Assets may be captured by serial number, make, model, asset tag, device type or other identifiers. Requirements for collection, packaging, site access, data sanitisation, reporting and final disposition should be agreed before equipment leaves the organisation.
IT assets often contain confidential or regulated information. A documented collection and chain-of-custody process helps show when equipment changed hands, where it was transported and how it moved through processing.
Data-bearing assets need an appropriate sanitisation decision based on information sensitivity, media type and intended reuse or disposal. Current NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 guidance emphasises an organisation-wide media sanitisation program, trusted techniques, verification, validation and evidence.
Depending on policy and risk, assets may be cleared, purged or physically destroyed. The method should be suitable for the actual storage technology rather than relying on a generic overwrite rule.
Where equipment is suitable and organisational policy permits it, testing and refurbishment can extend asset life. Reuse may improve environmental outcomes and can preserve residual value compared with treating every retired device as waste.

Reporting turns the physical process into auditable evidence. Depending on the project, records may include itemised asset inventories, sanitisation results or certificates, processing outcomes, recycling data and project summaries. See our IT asset audit and reporting service.
E-waste recycling focuses primarily on the responsible recovery and processing of end-of-life electronic equipment. ITAD is broader: it manages the entire retirement process, including inventory, logistics, information security, reuse decisions, recycling and evidence.
An organisation may therefore need e-waste recycling as one part of its ITAD program, but recycling alone does not necessarily provide the data-security controls and asset-level audit trail expected from a complete ITAD service.
