Government IT asset disposition
A government technology refresh may involve laptops, desktops, servers, storage, networking equipment, mobile devices and other electronics. Each asset should be assessed for the correct end-of-life pathway rather than automatically treated as waste.
A structured IT asset disposition (ITAD) program can combine:
- scheduled collection and controlled transport;
- asset identification and reconciliation;
- secure data sanitisation or physical media destruction;
- testing and assessment for reuse or refurbishment;
- responsible recycling of end-of-life equipment; and
- reporting aligned to the agreed project scope.
Data security and chain of custody
Government assets can hold personal, operational or commercially sensitive information. The security process should therefore start at collection and continue through sanitisation, destruction, reuse or recycling.

WA Government CUARWD2025
The current WA Government arrangement identifies Recycle IT as a Category A recycling supplier. Category A is non-mandatory, applies to metropolitan Perth and includes e-waste sanitisation, recycling and destruction along with other resource-recovery streams.
The CUA’s preferred hierarchy prioritises reuse and reprocessing before recycling, energy recovery and landfill. That approach aligns well with secure ITAD: reusable technology should be retained in circulation when security, condition and project requirements allow, while true end-of-life equipment should move to responsible recycling.
